June 1 - August 31,
2008
Hwy. 13, Fifield
Open Fridays & Sundays 1-5 p.m. the
first weekend in June thru Labor Day. There is no admission charge.
The old Fifield Town Hall served as a government building
from 1894 until 1967. It had been built to replace the original
hall that was lost in the fire of 1893. That fire destroyed the
business district of Fifield. The large upstairs hall that held
town meetings also hosted a variety of local social gatherings as well.
The lower floor held the town government offices.
Today,
this unique building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
It houses artifacts from the loggings days of Price County from 1879 thru
1930s. Exhibits include the kitchen, a collection of households
and personal items, and changing exhibits. A gift shop offers books
about local and northern Wisconsin history and life.
Greenfield
School, a one-room school, was moved to this site in 1998. It has
been restored and serves as a repository for Price County rural school
history, school artifacts, research materials and books. It is also
the society's office which serves the museum.

AMERICAN mASTERPIECES - FRED SMITH'S WISCONSIN CONCRETE PARK
June 7, 2008
Wisconsin Concrete Park, Phillips
1 p.m. - 3 p.m. - Introduction, presentation, tour, and food/refreshments. In 1948, Fred Smith began construction of what
is known today as the “Wisconsin Concrete
Park.” Smith created some two-hundred figures
chronicling Northwoods ways, legends, and
creatures. His array of life-size and larger-than-life-size characters in Phillips is considered to be
one of America’s most extraordinary displays of
vernacular art and is cared for by Price County and
the Friends of Fred Smith. This events is sponsored in part by a grant from the Wisconsin Arts Board and is one of six events of the John Michael Kohler Arts Center's
American Masterpieces summer series.

ALL SCHOOLS REUNION
June 7, 2008
Catawba School
Noon; This is a social event with an historic twist. The idea, formed
in 1999, was toi nclude present and former students of south western Price
County, focusing on the Kennan-Catawba area. The first reunion was held
at the Catawba Elementary School the second Saturday in June of 2000 and
it continues annually by popular demand.
A potluck
meal at noon begins the festivities, followed by an informal program which
has in the past included displays of photos of the 12 rural school houses,
a storyteller, audience participation of shared memories, such as school
lunches (carried in syrup or lard pails), walking to school experiences,
and playground games. Our most ambitious project was to identify all the
teachers who taught in the 12 rural schools and two state graded schools.
It is a work in progress, but we've been quite successful. The names will
be available to geneology researchers.
This
event continues to be popular with local people and visitors as well,
who come back to reminisce. At the present time, all public schools in
this area have closed, so this is truly a part of preserving local history.
The event is sponsored by the Jump River Valley Historical Society.

June
1 - August 31, 2008
Hwy. 13, downtown Fifield
It is also
the society's office which serves the museum.

information or tour reservations, write PCHS, P.O. Box 156, Fifield, WI
