Horseback Riding Trails

Price County offers many opportunities for the horseback riding enthusiast. There are several trails to choose from with a variety of settings and opportunities for either a short ride or lengthier trip with an overnight stop. Most of these trails are multiple-use trails. Some are non-motorized.  Please be courteous to other trail users.  For more information, contact the Northwoods Equestrian Trail Riders, 715-339-4804, http://www.geocities.com/pricecountyhorsetrails/, tesbrook@pctcnet.net.

Price County Forest

There are several designated wildlife areas and wildlife viewing trails located in the Price County Forest. Horseback riding is permitted on all county forest roads and trails.  Horses are not allowed in county parks or campgrounds, on beaches or nature trails. The Holy Cross Trail, about 8 miles northeast of Phillips, has also recently been developed specifically for horseback riding.  The Timm's Hill National Trail begins at Timm's Hill County Park in Ogema. Horses cannot be ridden in the park, but you can unload your horses by the hitching post in the parking area on the east side of Bass Lake to access the trail. You can also ride the Solberg Lake Trail, about 5 miles northeast of Phillips.  These trails are non-motorized.

Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest (CNNF)

The CNNF, located in the Park Falls/Fifield area, has five (5) multiple-use trails for horseback riding.  Non-motorized trails include: The Smith Rapids River Saddle Trail, including an equestrian campground and 18.5 miles of trail; loops B & D (the middle loops) of the Wintergreen Trail (the other loops are usually too wet); the Round Lake Trail (this trail not marked real well / located east of Fifield off Hwy. 70 on Shady Knoll Road); and the Newman Springs Trail (this trail is usually quite wet). There are many forest roads to ride as well. The Flambeau Trail System is shared with ATVs, see ATV map).

Flambeau River State Forest

Horseback riders are welcome to ride on old logging roads and/or gravel roads. Horses are not allowed on any beaches, nature/hiking/biking trails, picnic areas or campgrounds.  Horses are allowed on the Flambeau River State Forest Trail (shared with ATVs, see ATV map) located west of Phillips.  The Oxbo Trail (non-motorized), located west of Fifield on Hwy. 70, has several loops.  Loop A can be quite wet, but the other loops are dry.

Other Trails

The Tuscobia State Trail (shared with ATVs / located west of Park Falls, see ATV map) and Pine Line (non-motorized April 1-Dec. 10, located just south Prentice) are rail trails that allow horseback riding.  Palmquists "The Farm", located in Brantwood, offers accommodations for horseback riding enthusiasts. They have trails for riding as well as indoor stalls and an outdoor corral.

Holy Cross Horse Trail (Non-Motorized)

The Holy Cross trail is located in the Price County forest east of Hwy. 13 between Fifield and Phillips. To get to the south parking area, take Hwy. 13 north of Phillips to Holy Cross Road (gravel). Go east across the railroad tracks, then north; it is 1.5 miles to intersection where Holy Cross Road turns to the right. Continue going straight .4 miles to the parking area. Do not turn right on Holy Cross Road.  There is room for 8-10 horse trailers if they are parked parallel. To get to the north parking area, take Hwy. 70 to Hicks (Landing) Road (blacktopped) east of Fifield. Go south on Hicks Landing Road about 4.6 miles to the parking lot. There is only room for two (2) horse trailers at this parking area.

This trail was created by the Northwoods Equestrian Trail Riders. They maintain the trail by clearing fallen trees and mowing the trails and parking lots and have furnished hitching rails, a mounting block, picnic tables, trail signing, and trail maps. The 20-miles of well-marked forested trails are gently rolling to flat.  There are no wet areas and horses do not require shoes.  The trails are 95 percent double wide looped with Trail A serving as a north boundary trail and Trail B serving as the south boundary trail.  All trails except Trail F are wide enough for horse and cart driving; a key for locked gates is available from the club or the Price County Forestry & Parks Department.  A free dispersed camping permit is required for overnight horse camping.  The permit form is available at the Northwoods Equestrian Trail Riders website, www.geocities.com/pricecountyhorsetrails.

From the parking area, continue down the road and around the gate to get to the trail.  If you take trail A to the left, it takes about 15-20 minutes to get to the north end of trail C, if you are riding leisurely.  It takes about another 15 minutes to reach the north end of trail E.
