News Release from the CNNF

Rhinelander, Wis.November 17, 2009. November 21 – 29, 2009 is regular gun deer hunting season. The Chequamegon–Nicolet National Forest (CNNF) wants all visitors to have a safe and memorable hunting experience this season.  CNNF wants to inform and remind the public of a few safety tips and helpful information while hunting on federal land.

In order to hunt on National Forest lands, you must have a valid license from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources; however, no special permit or license is required by CNNF. Wisconsin DNR license, permit, and registration information can be found on their website: http://www.dnr.state.wi.us/org/caer/cs/licenses.htm.

Hunting is permitted on the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest unless otherwise posted. Please be aware that hunting is not allowed within 150 yards of buildings, campgrounds, developed recreation sites or occupied areas such as boat launches, picnic areas, etc., or in a manner or place that could cause injury or damage. Since Wisconsin does not require landowners to post a “no trespasser” notice on private land, it may be helpful for hunters to purchase a visitor map from any CNNF District Office which highlights National Forest and private land boundaries.

Please be aware that leaving any fire without completely extinguishing it or without removing all flammable materials from around the campfire to prevent its escape is strictly prohibited. In the event of an escaped fire the individual(s) responsible could face not only the loss of personal property, but prosecution, fines, and suppression costs. Forest Law Enforcement and fire personnel will be patrolling and visiting deer camps to ensure compliance until substantial rain or snow changes the conditions.

All portable stands and ground blinds are allowed on National Forest land, however if they are left unattended one week after the close of the season, they will be impounded. Permanent stands and ground blinds are not allowed. Hunters are prohibited from driving their vehicles off the road or trail to either set up or remove a portable hunting stands.  Off-road trail and vehicle use is strictly prohibited anywhere on the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest.

A variety of hunter hiking and walking trails can be found on CNNF. Many are existing hiking trails used year-round and others are specifically for hunters. There are even Hunter Access Trails, (HATs) that are specifically managed to enhance wildlife habitat such as ruffed grouse. These HATs maps can be found at CNNF District Offices, as well as online:  http://www.fs.fed.us/r9/cnnf/rec/hunting/main_vicin_map.html.

Please visit the CNNF hunting website at http://www.fs.fed.us/r9/cnnf/rec/hunting/ for more information regarding deer hunting season.

The CNNF wants everyone who visits the National Forest to always keep safety in mind. If you are not hunting, but still plan on being in the forest during hunting season, we strongly recommend you wear blaze orange clothing to distinguish yourself.

If you have questions or comments regarding hunting on CNNF, please contact one of the District Offices: Eagle River - 715-479-2827; Florence - 715-528-4464; Glidden - 715-264-2511; Hayward - 715-634-4821; Lakewood - 715-276-6333; Laona - 715-674-4481; Medford - 715-748-4875; Park Falls - 715-762-2461; Washburn - 715-373-2667.
