Wildlife in Price County

Price County is home to a variety of wildlife.  There are many trails, country roads and wilderness areas which provide opportunities for you to see some of the many wildlife species native to our area.  Wildlife is more active at dusk and dawn and during the spring and fall.  A list of wildlife viewing areas is shown below.  For best viewing, wait quietly and scan the clearings adjacent to wooded areas.  Binoculars are helpful, especially during the spring hatching times when it is best to keep your distance.  For information on trails, go to the Hiking page at http://www.pricecountywi.net/hike.html.  If you are interested in contacting a guide for a photography hunt or wildlife viewing expedition, see the list shown below the Wildlife Areas chart.  For information on the Great Wisconsin Birding and Nature Trail, scroll down the page.

Guides are available to take you on photography or wildlife viewing expeditions. These individuals spend many hours in the woods scouting wildlife for viewing and for hunting.

The Great Wisconsin Birding and Nature Trail is a mapped auto trail that when complete, will reach into every area of the state. Full-color viewing guides with maps and descriptions of every site will lead the nature traveler to warblers, shorebirds, eagles, loons, cranes and all manner of mammals found in some of the states premier wildlife venues. Outstanding natural resources will make this an exceptional trail. The public has nominated National forest sites, State Natural Areas, county, city and State Parks, private museums, nature centers and US Fish & Wildlife Service properties for inclusion in the project. A system was used to asses each site and those that ranked highest in the process were placed in the project.

Signs with a Sandhill Crane trail logo mark sites on the trail. The Great Wisconsin Birding and Nature Trail is a project of the Wisconsin Bird Conservation Initiative . The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources' Endangered Resources Program has taken the lead on the project. The Wisconsin Department of Tourism is producing full-color viewing guides for each of the five, birding and nature trail regions. To view the map of our region visit http://www.wisconsinbirds.org/trail/northmap.htm.
